Mr. Lasseter Woodard, age 96, of Woodland Springs Trail, Boone, died Tuesday evening, March 1, 2011 at Watauga Medical Center. Born May 9, 1914 in Bibb County Alabama, he was a son of the late John Wesley Woodard and Mary Virginia Kelly Woodard. Lasseter was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers where he worked in the finance and accounting office of the divisions in Nashville, Hawaii, Okinawa, Memphis, and Italy. He was also a WWII US Navy Veteran. Mr. Woodard was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church in Boone.
He was an excellent athlete in many sports from his childhood, including swimming, gymnastics, and baseball, and remained competitive in basketball through most of his adult life. Lasseter was an avid handball player, playing competitively until he was at least 65, and he was a familiar face at the Wellness Center in Boone into his 90s. He loved the outdoors, and especially appreciated the beauty of the woods and mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.
He and his wife taught and performed international folk dance from the time they were married in Nashville, Tennessee in 1938 until the late 1990s. This included volunteer work with many school, youth and church groups wherever they lived, as well as leading large international folk dance festivals in Okinawa in the 1960s, leading the Allegrezza dance troupe in Menphis, consulting with Theater Memphis on period dances for the annual 4-week run of A Christmas Carol for 20 seasons, and teaching regularly at regional and national dance workshops.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruth Greene Woodard; two daughters: Charlotte Woodard Schipman and husband Swinson of Pensacola, Florida, and Susan Elizabeth Woodard and husband Thomas of Boone; four grandchildren: Cathy Schipman Boehme and husband Arlan of Pace, Florida, Connie Schipman Terry and husband James, Steve Schipman of Mobile, Alabama and Dawn Leigh Woodard of Boone; seven great grandchildren: Galen Boehme, Rebecca Terry, Ginny Boehme, Hunter Schipman, Ian Schipman, Thomas Swinson Terry and John Wolfe Schipman; and Las� brother�s wife Betty (Mrs. Marvin P.) Woodard of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
Funeral services for Mr. Lasseter Woodard will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o�clock at Deerfield United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2 o�clock until 3 o�clock. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
