Phoebe Baird Yates Smith, 99, of Brookwood Drive, Valdese, and a native and former resident of the Matney Community, died Monday, December 27, 2010 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in Valdese. Born August 29, 1911 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Alexander and Bertha Hubbard Baird.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one sister, Lucy B. Parlier of Elizabethton, TN; four step-children; a number of nieces and nephews; special friends, Vera Helms and Paulette Barrier, both of Valdese; and her church family at Drexel Memorial Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by first husband, James Baird, her second husband, Tommy Edward Yates, and her third husband, Kermit George Smith, daughter, Rachel Lynn Yates, four sisters, Otha Wilson, Mary Greer, Claty Hartley and Lois Bolick, and two brothers,
Lester and Lewis Baird.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 30, 2010, at 1 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. David Orders. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 12 until 1 PM, one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes.
Burial will follow in the Matney-Liberty Community Cemetery.
