Obituary of Chloe M. Hodges

Chloe Miller Hodges, age 86, of Old US Highway 421 South, Boone, died Monday morning, July 19, 2010 at the Watauga Medical Center. She was born April 18, 1924 in Boone to Joseph Grant and Ida Matokia Watson Miller. Mrs. Hodges was a member of Laurel Springs Baptist Church. She and her late husband Joe opened and operated Parkway Grill from 1955 until 1961 then Hodges Drive-In from 1962 until 1975. Following retirement from the restaurant, she was employed for twelve years with the Watauga County Project on Aging. Mrs. Hodges is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Hodges Church and husband, Winston, of Elk Park; one son, Harold Hodges of Jefferson; one son-in-law, Vernon Waters of Boone; six grandchildren, Pam Davis and husband Butch, of Fleetwood, Donna Bare and husband, Jerry, of West Jefferson, Lori Corbin and husband, Carroll, of Boone, Kara Jackola and husband, Daniel, of Timberlake, Heather Pearson of Durham and Aaron Hodges of Asheville, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Joyce Rhymer and husband, Stewart, of Deep Gap, Peggy Colvin of Chester, SC, Lois Young of Boone, and Nell Greene of Hudson; and three brothers, Boyd Miller and wife, Martha, Homer Miller and wife, Betty, and Herbert Miller, all of Lenoir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hensley Hodges, one daughter, Barbara Waters, three sisters, Tois Hampton, Clara Hodges and Faye Miller, one brother, Charles Miller. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, July 23, at 11 o'clock at Laurel Springs Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Brent Bolick and Rev. Dr. Sherrill Wellborn and Rev. Homer Greene. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
