Sgt. First Class Retired Billy Jack Greer, age 73, of Jones Drive, Boone, died Tuesday morning, April 20, 2010 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born in Watauga County April 2, 1937, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Willie Greer. Bill was a retired Sergeant First Class, having served in the US Army for 20 years. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After his military service, Bill returned to Boone where he worked in tractor sales and service for Quality Ford Tractor and Boone Kubota. He was a member of Laurel Springs Baptist church and attended Meat Camp Baptist Church. Bill has a smile for everyone he ever met, those smiles and his kindness will be with us forever.
Surviving are his wife; Peggy Miller Beck Greer, one son; Tony Greer and wife Debbie of Mountain City, Tennessee, three grandsons; Erik Greer and wife Rachel of Mobile, Alabama, Patrick and Logan Greer of Reno, Nevada, two great grandchildren; Thomas and Allison Greer of Mobile, Alabama, three sisters; Louise Moretz of Boone, Joyce Carlton and husband Grady of Fleetwood and Betty Wood and husband Leroy of Boone, three brothers; Nelson Greer and wife Teresa of Vilas, Troy Greer and wife Elaine of Boone and Loye Greer and wife Peggy of Boone, one sister in law, Janelle Yates and husband Harry of Aho, one brother in law, Ron Miller of West Jefferson, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers in law; J. C. Moretz and Paul L. Miller and a sister in law; Colleen R. Miller.
Memorial services for Sgt. First Class Retired Bill Greer will be conducted Saturday at noon at Meat Camp Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Mike Townsend and Mr. Tim Moretz. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday morning prior to the service from 10 o'clock until noon at Meat Camp Baptist Church. The family respectfully requests no food.
