Lenval Lee Hicks, age 84, of George Edmisten Road, Sugar Grove, died Monday evening, March 8th, 2010 at Watauga Medical Center. He was born May 16, 1925 in the Beech Creek community of Watauga County to Barney and Della Hicks. Mr. Hicks was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was a farmer and retired from the Blue Ridge Shoe Company. Mr. Hicks enjoyed bluegrass music and loved genealogy research. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy during WWII and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal (4 stars) and the Philippine Operations Medal (1 star).
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Bessie Mae Presnell Hicks; six sons, Jimmy Hicks and wife, Eunice, and Danny 'Butch' Hicks, all of Sugar Grove, Larry Hicks and wife, Anne, of Hudson, Ronnie Hicks and wife, Brenda, of Sugar Grove; Dale Hicks of Valle Crucis; and Steve Hicks and wife, Kim, of Vilas; two daughters, Barbara Glenn of Vilas, and Pam Lunceford and husband, Joe, of Sugar Grove; eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one step grandson, one step-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Juanita Gooch of Banner Elk and Lillie Davis of Mobile, Alabama; and one brother, Kenneth Hicks of Sugar Grove. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Major, Charlie, Henry, Clint, Louie, Richard, J.E., and Benjamin Hicks, and two sisters, Mae Presnell and Betty Miller.
Funeral services for Lenval Lee Hicks will be private.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
