Obituary of Lamar D. Smith

Lamar Delano Smith, age 72, of Jenny Lane, Boone, North Carolina, died Wednesday afternoon, February 10, 2010 at Watauga Medical Center. He was born August 15, 1937 in Auburndale, Florida to Rohie St. Clair and Virginia Jensen Hughes. Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Navy as a seaman during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Lamar Smith Electric Co. in Lakeland, Florida for several years and was a partner in Hatchet Jacks Trading Post in Blowing Rock. Lamar was an avid fisherman and he loved his most recent hobby of collecting all types of fishing lures. Surviving are one son, Gary Smith of Lakeland, Florida; two grandsons, Gavin Smith of Lakeland, Florida and Matt Smith, of St. Petersburg, Florida; one daughter, Teresa Smith; one sister, Sylvia Jenson Bradway of Lakeland, Florida; and one great-grandson, Gage Waylon Lee Smith. Also surviving are his companion of twelve years, Ruby Harper; and her children, Beverly Fletcher and Jeff Harper; and grandchildren, Tiffany Hopper and Rhett Harper, and two great grandchildren, all of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Anna Hollars Smith, one son, Larry Smith, and one sister, Nita Blackburn. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, February 13, 2010, at 1 o'clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Vernon Eller. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
