November 8, 2009 Mr. Ward Gurney Carroll, age 91, of Carroll Drive, Boone, died Sunday morning, November 8, 2009 at Watauga Medical Center. Born September 25, 1918, he was a son of the late P. G. and Mary Elizabeth Winkler Carroll. Mr. Carroll attended Appalachian State University and drove a Greyhound Bus prior to leaving for WWII. He married Elsie Elizabeth Baker December 20, 1942. Mr. Carroll was a US Army Veteran having served under General George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. Ward fought on the front line for one hundred days in temperatures of under thirty below zero. He served in the Army for three years. Mr. Carroll operated a lumber business for several years before becoming Sheriff of Watauga County in 1966. Sheriff Carroll served the people of Watauga County for sixteen years, until December of 1982. He was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elsie Baker Carroll; two children; Johnny Baker Carroll and wife Shelby Holbrook Carroll and Kathy Ann Carroll and husband Michael T. Schweitzer all of Boone; two grandsons; Michael Wayne Carroll and wife Sabrina Caldwell Carroll of Johnson City, Tennessee and Ryan Nickolas Schweitzer of Boone; two great grandchildren; Trysten and Reiley Carroll of Johnson City, Tennessee; two sisters; Norma Carroll Collins of Millers Creek and Molly Carroll Jackson of Washington State; and two nieces; Gayle Collins Benton and husband Edward of Millers Creek and Carol Ann Jackson Scott of New Hampshire. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter; Vickie Lynn Carroll, one sister Eula Carroll Cowles and a daughter in law; Carolyn Bumgarner Carroll. Funeral services for Mr. Ward Gurney Carroll will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o�clock at Rutherwood Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Gary Lawrence and Judge Phil Ginn. Entombment will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Wednesday morning prior to the service from 9:30 until 11 o�clock. Persons wishing to pay their respects to Mr. Carroll may come by Austin & Barnes Funeral Monday from 2 o�clock until 6 o�clock or Tuesday from 9 o�clock until 6 o�clock. The family respectfully requests no food or flowers, and suggests memorials to Rutherwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 142 Don Hayes Road, Boone, NC 28607.
