Obituary of James C. Pennell

Mr. James Calvin Pennell, age 78, of Charlie Hicks Road, Banner Elk, died Monday night, September 28, 2009 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. Born April 9, 1931 in Johnson County, Tennessee, he was a son of the late Spencer and Annie Mae Norris Pennell. Mr. Pennell was a retired Machinist, an Army Veteran of WWII and a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Surviving are: his wife, Kathryn Pennell, four sons; Darrell Wayne Pennell of Indiana, Michael Lester Pennell and Thomas James Pennell of New York, Robert Thomas of Hickory, two daughters; Beverly Hicks and husband Paul of Banner Elk and Gail Canter and husband Kenneth of Todd, two sisters; Mary Ann Pennell and Virginia Pennell-Arnette both of Zionville, two brothers; Jerry Pennell of Fleetwood and Earl Pennell of Zionville, 8 grandchildren; Richard, Johnathan, and Joshua Hicks, Tony Thomas, Michella Thomas Justin Ross, Makayla Canter and Flecia Pennell and ten great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters; Ruby Pennell, Lucy Ellen and Rachel Coffey.
Funeral services for Mr. James Calvin Pennell will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3 o\'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state at the Chapel from 2 until 3 o\'clock. Officiating will be Rev. Homer Murdock. Burial will follow at the Rainbow Cemetery in Mountain City.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 o\'clock until 7:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
