Richard Walters of Boone passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2009, in the Watauga Medical Center due to diabetis-related complications. He was born in 1949 in Lima, Ohio to John and Mary Anne Walters both deceased. He advanced through the Lima City School System through 9th grade when the family moved to the Cincinnati, Ohio area where he graduated from Mariemont High School, class of 1967. After high school, he attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to moving to Boone in 1982, he lived and worked for several years each in Newberryport, MA, Jonesboro, TN and Asheville, NC. In Boone he pursued his love for sculpture, collaborating with other artists to create many pieces of art in the Boone area. When failing haelth forced him to give up sculpting, he turned to painting as his favored form of creative expression. He will be remembered most for his work helping those suffering from alcoholism to find sobriety, and to live happy and fulfilling lives. He will be missed. He is survived by a son, Jesse Walters of Boone; a brother, David Walters, and wife Lonnie of Hendersonville, NC; a nephew, John Walters of Hendersonville, NC; and a maternal aunt, Nancy Dawe of Lima, Ohio.
