Obituary of Joseph C. Hyland

Joseph C. Hyland of Boone died peaceful on Friday evening Sept 13th, 2013, surrounded by family & friends. He was born in Mayfield, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1927 to Joseph Francis and Agnes Hyland. He had three brothers, James, Charles and Paul, and an infant sister, Agnes, and his wife, Frances Miller Hyland, who preceded him in death. Upon graduating high school in Pennsylvania, Joe enlisted in the Navy and served from 1944-1947. Following an honorable discharge from the service he moved to the Washington DC area where he met and married Frances Miller. He began working as a barber and eventually owned and operated his own shop in Arlington, Virginia for42 years. He raised two daughters, Elizabeth and Patricia. Upon retiring he moved to the NC mountains and settled with his wife, Frances, in Boone. Joe was actively involved with St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church and became a long time volunteer with Watauga County meals-on-wheels and other civic organizations. He was a great sports fan who loved to attend baseball and football games, especially the Washington Redskins and ASU football. He is survived by his daughters, Liz Beckmeier and husband, Bill, in Arlington, and Patricia Hyland Patella and husband, Carmen, in Boone; and four granddaughters, Lani Dieterle and husband, Sean, in Charlotte, Saedra Patella in Charlotte, Caroline Hesse and husband, Dustin, in Falls Church, Va. and Celena Patella in Blowing Rock, NC. He also has four great-grandchildren, Josie and Max in Charlotte, Ella in Falls Church and Devon in Blowing Rock. Joe is also survived by nephews and nieces, Paul, Tommy, Chuck, Peggy, Kathy and extended family in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, September 16th, at 11 AM at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, officiated by Father Dave Brzoska. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Lawn Memorial Park.
