Mr. John Daniel "J. D." Cook, Sr. age 88, of Hillcrest Circle, died Monday evening January 5, 2008 at home. Born in Watauga County June 9, 1920, he was a son of the late Daniel Webster and Bertha Hodges Cook. J. D. was a manager with Maymead, Inc. for over 20 years, was the owner of Blue Ridge Block, and worked as a salesman for Blue Ridge Supply. He was an avid golfer and co-founder and board member of the Boone Golf Course. J. D. was a member of Greenway Baptist Church, Snow Lodge # 363 AF & AM, The Scottish Rite and the Appalachian Shrine Club. J. D. was also a US Army Veteran having served in WWII.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Ollis "Tot" Cook, one son; John D. Cook, Jr. and wife Carol of Boone, one grandson, John Daniel Cook, III and wife Emily of Boone, one sister in law, Ora Lee Winebarger of Boone, and one brother in law, Ed Clay of Aberdeen, NC. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters; Mary C. Brown, Jackie C. Clay, and Wilma C. Hartley, and two brothers; Boyd and Alton Cook.
Funeral services for Mr. J. D. Cook will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Boone United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Allan Johnson and Rev. John Fitzgerald. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o'clock. Masonic graveside services and entombment will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Boone United Methodist Church Television Ministry, 471 New Market Boulevard, Boone, NC 28607.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
