Obituary of Perry Alfred Adams

Perry Alfred Adams, Sr., age 80, of Adams Road, Vilas, passed away Friday morning, August 10, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Born May 23, 1938 in Watauga County, he was a son of Dolph and Ellen McNeil Adams. Perry was a building contractor and partner of Beach & Adams Builders in Boone. He enjoyed gardening, farming, raising beef cattle, tobacco and cabbage. He served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Brushy Fork Baptist Church. Always proud to be called a Veteran, Perry served in the US Air Force, earning the rank E-4 Airman during the cold war era, stationed in Iceland, California, Texas and Illinois. His specialty was 58150 Parachute Rigger. For his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Metal/SO A-27/7 JAN 60/60/12th ADIV.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Mary Frances Hartley Adams; son, Perry Adams, Jr. of Vilas; daughter, Melissa (Missy) Adams Whitley and husband, Chris Whitley, Jr., and granddaughter, Ashlyn Whitley, all of Prosperity, SC; sisters, Rachel Combs and Glenda Aldridge and husband Elmer, all of Vilas, and Minnie Mercer of Alaska; brother, Everett Adams and wife Gladys, of Trade, TN; and half-brother, Bill Adams of Mountain City, TN. A number of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Bonnie Beach, Mary Rominger, Janie Broyhill and infants, Betty and Evelyn Mae; brothers, Dave and Bob Adams; special nephew, Brian Aldridge; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Burl and Claty Baird Hartley.
As Mr. Adams requested, graveside services with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post #130 will be conducted Sunday afternoon, August 12, 2018, at 2 oclock at the Adams Cemetery in Vilas, officiated by Rev. John Mark Brown, Pastor Peter Vandenberg and Rev. Toby Oliver. Following graveside services, the family will gather at the Brushy Fork Baptist Church Fellowship Hall until 4 p.m. The family respectfully requests no flowers and suggests memorials to the Adams Cemetery Fund in care of Johnny Hayes, 171 Laurel Fork Road, Vilas, NC 28692, or to the American Legion Post #130, 135 Bear Trail, Boone, NC 28607.
