Vernie O�Dell Phillips, 91, of Big Hill Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at his home. Born August 3, 1921 in Ashe County, he was a son of John Franklin and Lillie Viola Eldreth Phillips. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp, during WWII. Mr. Phillips was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church. After retirement from Watauga Medical Center, he spent his time doing what he loved, fishing and tending his vegetable gardens, but most of all, loving his family.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Marilyn Smith Phillips; son, Steve Phillips and wife, Sandra, of Boone; daughter, Judy Johnson and husband, David, of North Wilkesboro; brother, Russell Phillips of Oxford, PA; two sisters, Peggy Mabe and husband, Charles, of Oxford, PA, and Velma Phillips of Hudson. Ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Frank Phillips; two brothers, Paul and Robert Gene Phillips; and two sisters, Connie Keys and Essie Stoker.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 2:30 at Meat Camp Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Mike Townsend and Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial, with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5 until 7o�clock at Austin & Barnes.
